Google Unveils Vision for Renovated Thompson Center Atrium in Chicago
Google has unveiled its vision for the Thompson Center's atrium in Chicago, which it plans to buy and renovate. The tech giant announced plans to acquire the James R. Thompson Center building in 2022 and has been working with Architecture Plus Information (A+I) to conceptualize a revamped design. The new rendering shows a grand staircase integrated with terraced seating and retail offerings beneath the 17-story atrium.
The activated atrium and plaza will feature food, retail, and space for seasonal events, according to Google's plans. A student-designed art piece commissioned by After School Matters is also set to be displayed in the retail concourse. Additionally, a sculpture created by artist Sanford Biggers will honor the Loop's history of public art.
Google has grown its employee base in Chicago to over 2,000 employees since opening its local office in 2000. The company is providing $1 million in funding to A Better Chicago to support student attendance as part of its efforts to revitalize the Thompson Center.
