Googlebook OS: A New Era in Laptop Operating Systems
Google has released its new operating system, Googlebook OS, designed for laptops and based on Android 16 and 17. The company's first new OS in 15 years, it uses the Material 3 Expressive Design and a Linux kernel.
The OS is promoted as a powerful alternative to Windows PCs and Macs, with access to numerous apps from the Google Play Store optimized for desktop use. However, the selection of available apps is still limited, and there are some restrictions.
Googlebook OS also supports AI agents like Claude CLI and Antigravity, which allows developers to program further AI support. The company promises 10 years of updates for its Googlebooks, with a new update released every three months.
The devices start at $899 from manufacturers like Dell and HP, but can reach up to $1,299 or higher. While the prices are competitive, some users may still be deterred by the lack of native support for demanding games and the need to stream via GeForce Now.
