Googlebooks laptops offer Android integration but may not replace Windows yet
Google has introduced a new category of premium laptops called Googlebooks, designed to work seamlessly with Android phones. These devices, built around Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence, are offered by brands like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with prices ranging from $899 to $1,299. Despite the name, Googlebooks are not just upgraded Chromebooks. They feature a unique operating system that blends Android technology with the desktop capabilities of ChromeOS, creating a more traditional laptop experience with enhanced Android integration.
For Android users, one of the standout features of Googlebooks is the deep integration with their smartphones. Users can open files stored on their phones, run mobile apps on the laptop, and seamlessly transition tasks between devices. This setup aims to provide Android users with a similar level of integration that Apple offers between iPhones and Macs. Additionally, Googlebooks come with premium hardware, including at least 16GB of memory and processors capable of handling AI tasks directly on the device. Features like Magic Pointer allow users to point at something on their screen and ask Gemini about it.
However, Googlebooks may not be suitable for everyone. While many consumers spend most of their time in web browsers and cloud-based tools, those who rely on specialized software, such as accounting, engineering, or photo-editing programs, may find Googlebooks limiting. The same applies to users with specialty printers or scanners that require Windows-specific drivers. Windows also remains the preferred choice for serious PC gaming and offers a broader selection of computers at various price points.
Googlebooks are best suited for individuals already invested in Google’s services and using Android phones. However, given that these are first-generation products priced similarly to well-equipped Windows laptops, potential buyers might want to wait and see how they perform in the real world before considering them a full replacement for Windows laptops.
