Google's AI Overviews Drive Shift Toward Zero-Click Searches in Search Industry
As Google's AI Overviews expand across more types of queries, search behavior is shifting toward zero-click searches. According to recent industry analysis, as many as 73 percent of Google searches now end without a click to an outside website.
This trend is driven by the rapid rise of AI Overviews, chatbots, and answer engines that resolve queries directly on the results page or inside a conversation, rather than sending searchers to an outside website.
Industry analysts expect this shift to continue, with Google expanding AI Overviews to new categories of queries throughout 2026. Competing answer engines from OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft have also rolled out their own citation and answer features over the same period.
This means businesses that depend on organic search traffic need to rethink their strategies built around traditional search engine rankings. A first-page ranking no longer guarantees a visit.
