Google’s recent policy update on AI tools in classrooms has sparked debate among educational technology experts. The company announced plans to disable AI features in its software for students, allowing school administrators to reverse the change. However, if a school restricts AI entirely, students will lose access to Google Search, as the feature is embedded with AI Mode and AI Overview, which cannot be turned off.

Critics, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, argue that Google is leveraging its monopoly to push AI use in schools. Mamdani, who imposed a one-year moratorium on generative AI in public schools, accused the tech giant of prioritizing profit over education. “No corporation should have the power to dictate how we teach our children,” he stated on social media.

Experts in classroom technology offer differing perspectives. Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath suggested Google’s move might backfire, incentivizing schools to revert to analog research tools like books and libraries. Meanwhile, consultant Jose Antonio Bowen noted that AI’s integration into search could open opportunities for competitors like DuckDuckGo, which offers an AI-free search engine.

DuckDuckGo’s founder, Gabriel Weinberg, observed a surge in traffic to its no-AI search page following Google’s announcement. The shift highlights growing concerns about the unintended consequences of AI integration in educational tools, particularly its potential to undermine the learning process by reducing the need for critical thinking and hard work.
