Google's AI Video Push Sets Stage for Storage Demand Boom
Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) free AI video push is poised to boost storage demand, and Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ: WDC) and Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX) are well-positioned to handle the increase. However, both companies have already sold out their nearline capacity through 2026-2027, raising questions about how much of this opportunity is reflected in their stock prices.
Google's AI video generator, Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash model, allows users with a Google account to create 1080p HD videos using set durations, avatars, and prebuilt templates for product launches and ads. The generated videos carry a SynthID watermark, creating large amounts of persistent data that nearline hard drives are designed to store.
Western Digital's cloud revenue accounted for 89% of its latest quarter, with total exabytes shipped growing 22% year-over-year, driven by nearline products. CEO says the company is sold out for calendar year 2026. Seagate Technology Holdings plc also has nearly all nearline capacity committed through calendar 2028 and a long-term revenue growth target of at least 20%.
Both Western Digital and Seagate have seen significant stock price increases, with Western Digital up roughly 330% and Seagate about 305% over the past year. This surge is well ahead of the industry's 45% revenue growth as investors price in continued AI data demand. However, being sold out can work both ways, and consumer AI video may create incremental storage demand without producing short-term sales.
