Google's Big Tech Antitrust Losses: A Turning Point in Industry Scrutiny?
Google has faced significant antitrust losses in recent years, with two separate cases brought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) finding the company liable for unlawfully maintaining monopolies in online search and advertising technology.
The first case, involving Google's Play Store, resulted in a $700 million settlement, while the second case found that Google had unlawfully monopolized the general search and search-text-advertising markets under Section 2 of the federal Sherman Act.
Olivier Sylvain, a professor of Law at Fordham University, notes that 'the liability findings are not terribly surprising given how total Google's domination has been in adtech,' and suggests that the real fight is over remedies.
