Google’s Gemini AI to Handle Calls with Friends and Family
Google is expanding its Call for Me feature, powered by Gemini, to allow the AI assistant to place phone calls directly to friends and family. Initially, the tool was designed for handling commercial tasks, such as booking reservations or checking store hours. However, recent app builds suggest Google is now preparing to extend this functionality to personal use.
The feature, originally introduced on Pixel 11 phones, was limited to interactions with businesses. According to Android Authority, new code reveals setup screens where users can instruct Gemini to manage quick personal reach-outs. For example, users can ask the AI to call “Mom” to inform her of a delay or contact “John” to confirm dinner plans.
Unlike traditional call forwarding, Gemini handles the entire exchange. It speaks to the recipient, delivers the message, gathers a response, and reports back to the user. This design is intended for short, convenient check-ins, making it useful for situations like driving or multitasking.
Privacy concerns have been addressed in the leaked code, which includes a toggle allowing contacts to block incoming automated AI calls if they prefer direct communication. Google has not confirmed an official release date, so the features may change before launch.
Currently, using the Call for Me feature requires being over 18 in the US, owning a Pixel 11 device, and having a $4.99 monthly Google AI Plus subscription.
