Google's Gemini Chatbot Now Accessible to All K-12 Students

Google's Gemini chatbot has been made available to all K-12 students through Google Classroom, leaving schools scrambling to manage its use. Until August, Gemini was only accessible to students aged 18 and older, but the recent change has given schools little time to determine how to restrict or monitor its use.

Justin Reich, an associate professor at MIT who studies education technology, stated that adopting new technology features normally allows staff to weigh the benefits and drawbacks before deciding to use it. However, this time around, districts had to decide almost immediately whether or not to prohibit access to Gemini, which is problematic because it sends a message that schools must manage technological change 'whenever the tech industry decides we have to deal with it.'

Experts and educators are concerned about the age-appropriateness of introducing artificially intelligent technologies to students of all ages. Google claims that the Gemini tab lets students work with AI in a way that is grounded in their course materials and based on effective teaching practices and online safety measures.
