Google's Gemma Models Hit Billion Downloads, But Investors Look Beyond
Google's DeepMind announced that its Gemma family of open models has reached one billion cumulative downloads since its launch in February 2024. The model architecture has been adopted by developers who have published over 100,000 distinct Gemma variants, creating an ecosystem known as the 'Gemmaverse'. This milestone is a significant achievement for Google, but it doesn't necessarily translate to direct revenue.
The figures are based on data from August 20, 2026, and show that Gemma added roughly 600 million downloads in less than five months. The model has been used by teams at NASA, Satlyt, and Starcloud for onboard image analysis, downlink optimization, and intersatellite routing.
However, the stock barely blinked when the announcement was made, with Alphabet's Class C shares closing at $338.20 on August 20, down 1.02% in a weak session. The market is more focused on Google Cloud revenue and ad growth, as well as the cost of keeping both businesses ahead in AI.
Google's strategy of giving away its model architecture for free is aimed at winning infrastructure business around it. This approach has been taken by other companies, including Meta's Llama family, which had already passed 1.2 billion downloads by late April 2025.
