Google's Massive Data Center Project Gets Green Light in Michigan
Google's massive 'Project Cannoli' data center has received approval to be built in Van Buren Township, Michigan. The 1.5 million square-foot facility will be located off Haggerty Road near I-94 and is expected to consume as much electricity as powering 750,000 homes.
According to Commissioner Chair Dan Scripps, Google will foot the bill for the project and residents won't see an increase in their energy bills. The deal between Google and DTE Energy includes a plan to provide 1600 MW of renewable energy from solar farms and nearly 480 MW of batteries that Google will pay for.
The approval comes as part of Michigan's growing data center landscape, with the state hosting 77 data centers across 38 cities. While some may be concerned about the impact of these large-scale projects on local infrastructure, Commissioner Scripps reassured that Google is one of the biggest and most profitable companies in the world and will cover its own energy costs.
