Google's MedGemma Aids Global Healthcare Providers with AI-Powered Medical Tools
Google has been working on MedGemma, a collection of open-weight AI models optimized to understand medical text and images. These models are built on Google's Gemma models and provide developers, researchers, and public health organizations with an adaptable foundation to build specialized tools that support triage, diagnostic screenings, and more.
MedGemma has been downloaded over 10 million times for thousands of research adaptations worldwide. The models can be adapted to local languages and address local health priorities while maintaining full ownership of data and infrastructure.
The global health organizations are putting MedGemma to work in three key settings: frontline care, high-volume hospitals, and nationwide public health programs. In rural Uganda, Crane AI is using MedGemma to build EaseHealth, a clinical decision support app that can run mobile applications without an active internet connection.
