Google's Pine Island Project Gains Rochester Chamber Support
The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Google's Project Skyway, a major development in Pine Island, Minnesota. Led by Ryan Companies, the 482-acre project will feature Google as the primary tenant, occupying 88 acres. The initial phase is expected to create over 700 skilled trades jobs, with around 100 permanent positions once operational. The development will bring $700 million in capital investment, significantly boosting Pine Island's commercial and industrial tax base.
Google's commitment includes over $100 million for utility and roadway infrastructure, along with $24 million for Pine Island Public Schools through the Panther Program. The funding will support STEM education and local career pathways, including upgrades like air conditioning, new playgrounds, and computers for students. Additionally, $3 million will be allocated for discretionary community use.
The project aligns with Minnesota's 2040 carbon-free energy goals, with Google funding 100% of the costs for new energy service and infrastructure. It will introduce 1,900 megawatts of clean-energy resources, including wind, solar, and battery storage. The Pine Island Google Data Center will use a closed-loop cooling system to minimize water use and restore 84 acres of floodplain forest along the Zumbro River.
Pine Island Mayor Brandi Veith Staloch emphasized the project's benefits for economic growth, infrastructure, and education. Ryan Parsons, president of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce, noted that Project Skyway represents a significant investment in Pine Island and Southeast Minnesota, with potential benefits extending beyond the project site. The project is currently under review by state agencies.
