Google's Thompson Center Revamp Unveils Modernized Chicago Headquarters

Google is revamping its Chicago headquarters in the historic James R. Thompson Center, according to new renderings released by the tech giant. The project began in 2024 and will maintain the shape of the postmodern building designed by German architect Helmut Jahn, completed in 1985.

The renovated space will feature a refurbished 17-story atrium with terraced seating, a sunken concourse, and a mix of retail and communal gathering space. The glass facade has been fully updated, giving the interior an open and organic feel.

Google plans to partner with After School Matters for a student-led art installation within the atrium. The renovated outdoor plaza will include new seating, flower beds, and a sculpture from artist Sanford Biggers.
