Grocery Retailers with Strong Private-Label Exposure May Thrive in Inflationary Environment
Inflation above 3% is putting pressure on consumer wallets, and investors are looking for ways to mitigate the effects. Grocery retailers and wholesale clubs that offer private-label products may be well-positioned to benefit from this trend.
Walmart (WMT) is the largest US grocery retailer in this space, with both its Walmart U.S. stores and Sam's Club relying heavily on private-label ranges to appeal to value-focused households. The company generates over $495 billion in revenue from Walmart U.S., $99 billion from Sam's Club, and $141 billion from international operations.
Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM) is another grocer with a strong focus on fresh, natural, and organic products under its own brand. With a market cap of around $7.6 billion, Sprouts operates across the US and generates about $9 billion in revenue from its single segment.
PriceSmart (PSMT), a membership warehouse club operator, also leans on private-label ranges to appeal to shoppers looking for value. The company runs U.S.-style clubs across several countries and generates around $5.7 billion in revenue from its Retail, Variety Stores segment.
