Historic Home Pantry Transformed into Modern Culinary Corridor

Designer Taylor Walker of Greenbook Design in Shelby, North Carolina, transformed a dedicated pantry into an elevated culinary corridor for a National Historic Preservation Home. The project, titled 'Seven Gables - Historic Home,' was entered into the Specialty (Pantry) category of the 2025 Top Shelf Design Awards.

Working within a registered landmark requires sensitivity to architectural context. Walker used the home's heritage as the foundation for her design scheme instead of treating it as a limitation. The pantry now embodies craftsmanship, attention to detail, and respect for historical integrity while meeting contemporary storage needs.

To reflect the period architecture, Walker specified traditional inset cabinetry constructed by Walker Woodworking. The exterior casework is finished in Sherwin-Williams Pure White Satin, lending a clean aesthetic that brightens the interior and establishes a timeless baseline.

The pantry features interior drawers crafted from solid walnut with dovetail joints, which contrast with the cabinet fronts and deliver a natural warmth, structural longevity, and an artisan feel. Storage is layered across multiple functional zones, including deep drawer capacity for oversized serving platters, open display and adjustable shelving for antique glassware, and integrated specialty storage for cooking essentials.
