Home Depot Customer Rages Against Corporate Surveillance at Self-Checkout
A Home Depot customer's frustration turned into an angry rant when she was asked to scan her driver's license at self-checkout while trying to use a gift card.
Lydia, who posts on TikTok as @dimplez_lydia, shared a video of the incident, which quickly went viral and sparked a conversation about corporate surveillance and data privacy.
The employee struggled to scan her receipt earlier in the exchange, eventually issuing her a store credit in the form of a gift card. When Lydia tried to use that same gift card at self-checkout, the system prompted her to scan her driver's license, which left her furious.
'I could have given it to anyone,' she said in the video. 'I could have given it to my daughter to run inside to purchase something, and you're telling me that we have to use our f, ing license to use a gift card at f, ing Home Depot now? And everybody's cool with this? You guys are completely cool with this?'
The video has resonated with viewers who are tired of being asked to hand over personal information for routine tasks. The incident is part of a larger conversation about how much control retailers have over our data and how much we're willing to tolerate.
