Home Depot Expands in Mexico Amid Calls for Highway Safety Upgrades
San Miguel de Allende is witnessing significant changes as Home Depot expands its presence in Mexico. The US-based home improvement chain has begun construction on a new store behind the MAC Hospital, with plans to invest $21 million in the project. This investment is part of Home Depot's larger commitment to Mexico, where it aims to spend $1.3 billion by 2030.
Home Depot has already established itself in numerous Mexican cities, employing over 18,000 people at its 140 stores. In addition to San Miguel de Allende, the company plans to open stores in León and Guanajuato. The new store in San Miguel will feature public space renovations and a commitment to replace mesquite trees removed during construction.
However, not all news is positive for residents of San Miguel de Allende. A group of residents has launched a petition calling for improvements to Highway 51, which has seen at least five fatalities and numerous accidents in recent times. The residents are requesting the installation of a traffic light, pedestrian crossing, and other safety measures.
The closure of Café de la Parroquia, a beloved local restaurant, has also been reported. After 37 years of operation, the family-run cafe ceased business on July 19, citing a desire to sell the building that houses it. The owners expressed gratitude for their time in San Miguel de Allende and acknowledged the memories created by customers.
