Home Depot Shoppers Raise Eyebrows Over Gift Card ID Scans
A Home Depot shopper named Lydia recently shared her frustrating experience with store employees on TikTok. She went to return or exchange an item, but things took a turn when she was issued store credit in the form of a gift card tied to her identity.
Lydia had brought both her receipt and driver's license for the return process, expecting some verification might be required. However, when the employee struggled to scan her receipt, Lydia questioned whether they had entered one of the digits incorrectly.
After some delay, a second employee corrected the issue, but instead of giving Lydia a cash refund, she was issued store credit on a Home Depot gift card. When Lydia went to use this credit at self-checkout, an employee asked her to scan her driver's license so it could be matched against the original return.
Lydia expressed confusion and frustration over why a gift card needed to be tied to her ID, stating 'That gift card I could have given to anyone.' She pointed out that she could have handed it to her daughter or another person to use instead, making the ID check seem unnecessary.
