Honeywell Unveils P40 Upgrade for F-35 Fighter Jets with Enhanced Cooling Capacity

Honeywell Aerospace has launched the P40 upgrade for the Power and Thermal Management System (PTMS) designed for Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets. The upgrade offers a significant increase in the aircraft's total cooling capacity, specifically a 25% boost.

According to Honeywell Aerospace, the upgrade requires no structural changes to the airframe and can be aligned directly with scheduled periodic maintenance, minimizing operational disruption to active squadrons.

The company confirmed that the P40 upgrade kit will be ready for integration on F-35 aircraft between 2029 and 2030, in line with global operators' schedules. Matt Milas, president of Defense and Space at Honeywell Aerospace, noted that operators urgently need added cooling capacity and improved operational readiness on a critical timeline.

Honeywell analyzed nearly one million flight hours of global fleet data to track the causes of in-flight non-resettable system shutdowns. Corrective adjustments included in the upgrade are expected to reduce such incidents by approximately 30%, with additional reliability improvements planned for the future.
