Hyperscalers' AI Funding Strategies Revealed
The five major hyperscalers, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet (Google's parent), Meta Platforms, and Oracle, are all investing heavily in artificial intelligence. While they spend on AI at similar scales, their strategies for funding these investments differ.
Microsoft stands out as the only company paying in cash, thanks to its robust free cash flow of $19.6 billion left over after covering net capital expenses last quarter. The company's total debt sits near $40.3 billion and has ample cash reserves available if cash flows ever turn negative.
Alphabet, on the other hand, is operating in red-ink mode, with a negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion in Q2 2026. Despite this, it still held $126.8 billion of liquid reserves at the end of Q1 and has a balance sheet that can support several years of cash burn.
Alphabet has made moves to support its cash requirements, including taking on new long-term debt and halting share buybacks for the first time in years. It also sold $49.6 billion of new shares, including a direct $10 billion investment from Berkshire Hathaway.
