Hyundai Motor Group has pushed back its plan to launch in-house driver-assistance software by two years, with vehicles now set to hit the roads in late 2029. The South Korean automaker will partner with Nvidia to accelerate deployment of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in 2028.

The partnership marks a shift from Hyundai's original plan to develop automated driving software in-house by late 2027. Park Min-woo, a president at Hyundai Motor Group, said the company will co-design technology with Nvidia and use data from the system to train and refine its own software platform, dubbed Atria.

Hyundai vehicles powered by Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform will initially bypass expensive lidar sensors in favour of cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. However, the company is considering lidar for its Level 3 automated systems, which allow hands-off driving under specific conditions.

Park said Hyundai believes sensor redundancy is critical to ensure safety, with multiple sensors able to maintain safe operation if one fails. The automaker expects to surpass competitors in accumulated driving data by 2033.
