IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories to accelerate its quantum computing project.

The company plans to use the lab to move toward a fault-tolerant machine before the end of the decade, with a key focus on delivering IBM Quantum Starling in 2029.

Currently, IBM operates more than 90 quantum systems and has over 325 Fortune 500 companies, universities, and government agencies among its users.

In a recent development, engineers at IBM connected and cooled the first pair of modular cryogenic cells in Poughkeepsie, New York. Each module operates below 15 millikelvin, an extremely low temperature comparable to deep space.
