IBM and NASA Unveil Open-Source AI Model for Lunar Exploration

IBM and NASA have released an open-source AI model designed for lunar scientific research and exploration. The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model was developed using a large collection of lunar observation data curated by IBM and NASA researchers.

The model aims to help scientists process complex data from various observation tools over decades into information that can support efforts to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

According to Juan Bernabe-Moreno, Director of IBM Research Europe, UK and Ireland, 'To unravel the many mysteries of the Moon, it takes the ability to study huge amounts of scientific data.'

The model was tested in identifying areas that potentially contain ice on the Moon, with a 22% reduction in error rate compared to the SwinV2-B model.
