IBM and NASA Unveil Open-Source AI Model for Lunar Exploration
IBM and NASA have released an open-source AI model for analyzing decades of lunar observation data. The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model was trained on a dataset combining data from multiple lunar missions, including NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Japan's SELENE/Kaguya mission.
The model demonstrated up to 23% improvement over existing methods in identifying geographic features on the Moon's surface.
According to Kevin Murphy, chief science data officer at NASA Headquarters, 'NASA has spent decades building an extraordinary scientific record of the Moon, but collecting data is only part of the job.'
