IBM Bolsters Mainframe Sales with Swift Blockchain Integration

IBM's Digital Asset Haven platform has integrated with Swift's blockchain payment network, allowing banks to send tokenized deposits around the clock without needing XRP tokens or Ripple's network.

This development is a blow to XRP investors, who had hoped that banks would use XRP as a bridge between currencies due to its speed and convenience. However, Swift's new system allows banks to move their own money on a shared ledger, making it unnecessary for them to rely on third-party solutions like Ripple.

IBM's involvement in this integration is also significant, as the company stands to gain from increased sales of its mainframe computers. IBM Z sales fell 42% in the second quarter, but this new partnership may help mitigate that decline by providing banks with a reason to buy more computing capacity or maintenance contract renewals.

Ripple's payment volume is soaring, and Ripple Labs is reportedly considering an initial public offering (IPO). However, Ripple is increasingly settling transactions using its own stablecoin, RLUSD, rather than XRP. This shift may put further pressure on XRP investors, who are already facing a challenging market.

While this integration is still in beta and has only been tested by 17 pilot institutions, it represents a significant step towards widespread adoption of tokenized deposits. If Swift's ledger scales as planned, banks will have even less reason to hold onto third-party stablecoins like RLUSD for interbank transfers.
