IBM's Q2 earnings call revealed that the company faced a software shortfall due to a sudden shift in customer spending from its core offerings to AI-focused hardware components. CEO Arvind Krishna attributed this shortfall to 'execution,' stating that IBM fell short in meeting client expectations.

The shortfall was largely caused by clients prioritizing supply chain-constrained infrastructure, such as servers, storage, and memory, ahead of expected price increases. This shift led to a delay in closing large deals, which accounted for the majority of the shortfall.

Krishna noted that about one-third of the delayed deals have since closed, with the company adapting to deliver greater business value to clients around its innovation and economic value alignment. He emphasized IBM's confidence in its ability to grow and drive shareholder value, citing its well-positioned portfolio to help clients realize value in a secure, cost-effective, and scalable way.

The company is also accelerating changes to its go-to-market model, expanding coverage across thousands of additional clients where its portfolio is highly relevant. Krishna highlighted IBM's recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, which power a majority of its high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.

Investors took a measured approach to this message, with IBM's stock price remaining stable following the earnings release.
