IBM CEO Acknowledges Software Shortfall Due to Execution Issues

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company's second quarter software shortfall was due to 'execution' issues, but pointed out that a shift in customer spending towards AI-focused hardware components has already started to rebound.

The shortfall was mainly caused by a sudden and dramatic change in client spending priorities at the end of June, with customers opting for servers, storage, and memory purchases ahead of expected price increases. This resulted in the company failing to close a low 10s number of large deals on the timelines expected, accounting for the majority of the shortfall.

However, Krishna claimed that about one-third of those shifted deals had since closed, indicating 'not yet full evidence' but a good indication that this was deferral and not destruction. He added that IBM has already started to see a shift back from the swerve towards AI-focused hardware components.

Krishna also highlighted plans to increase the use of AI to help scale software development, bolster sales and marketing efforts, and optimize the supply chain. The company's recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, power a majority of IBM's high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.
