IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced an 'execution' shortfall in its second quarter of fiscal 2026, but expressed confidence in IBM's growth prospects. The shortfall was attributed to a shift in customer spending from IBM's traditional software and infrastructure offerings to AI-focused hardware components.

The sudden shift led to the postponement of a double-digit number of large deals, accounting for the majority of the shortfall, according to CFO James Kavanaugh. Krishna emphasized that these deals were delayed due to clients prioritizing other capital expenditures over IBM's offerings.

However, Krishna noted that IBM has since engaged with clients on these deals and expects about one-third of them to close within the next six months, indicating a shift back towards IBM's traditional business. This reassurance was echoed by Kavanaugh, who highlighted the strength of IBM's software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent.

The vendor is also accelerating changes to its go-to-market model to capture growth opportunities in emerging areas, such as AI. Krishna emphasized that IBM's portfolio is well-positioned to help clients realize value in a secure, cost-effective, and scalable way. Despite the shortfall, investors took a measured approach, with IBM's stock price remaining stable following the earnings release.
