IBM has introduced the Unified Key Orchestrator (UKO) for Secure Room Operation (SRO), a new solution designed to enhance cryptographic governance. Built on the IBM Enterprise Key Management Foundation (EKMF) Workstation, UKO for SRO integrates controlled generation, management, and secure distribution of cryptographic key material into a standardized software offering. The system leverages IBM Z to store metadata and key material, aiming to simplify deployment while maintaining tight control over sensitive cryptographic operations.
The solution is tailored for heavily regulated industries such as financial services, payments, and government sectors. It offers centralized lifecycle management for enterprise and payment-grade cryptographic keys, policy-driven key generation, and secure distribution across various environments. Additional features include hardware-based dual control, role-based access, and automated key deployment, synchronization, backup, and recovery.
IBM emphasizes the growing need for strong cryptographic governance amid increasing regulatory scrutiny, evolving cyber threats, and the transition to post-quantum cryptography. UKO for SRO is part of the broader IBM Unified Key Orchestrator family, which supports cryptographic operations across secure-room, IBM Z, distributed, containerized, and hybrid cloud environments. This centralized approach is designed to improve operational efficiency, security, and compliance while enabling crypto agility and future quantum-safe security.
UKO for SRO complements other offerings in the UKO family, such as UKO for z/OS, UKO for Containers, and UKO Crypto Connect. It specifically addresses cryptographic operations requiring highly controlled secure-room processes, including key ceremonies, card issuance, ATM, and point-of-sale environments. By integrating these specialized controls with centralized key management, organizations can better adapt to evolving cryptographic standards and threats.
