IBM has made significant progress towards its goal of developing a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The company has successfully integrated and cooled two cryogenic modules to below 15 millikelvin, a crucial step in scaling up quantum systems.

The achievement is part of IBM's roadmap for delivering the IBM Quantum Starling system in 2029, which will be the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. The Starling system will incorporate advances in error correction, processor design, decoding, and overall systems engineering.

Each module measures over 8 feet tall and wide and uses a box-shaped design that allows multiple units to connect in a tight row. This layout enables direct linking of quantum processors through IBM's L-coupler technology, which connects separate chips to enable them to exchange information and function together as components of a larger quantum computer.

IBM plans to install its Quantum Nighthawk processors into the cryogenic modules later this year for performance testing. When Starling reaches deployment, each cryogenic module is expected to house thousands of qubits.
