International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shares rose by 3.5% during mid-day trading on Wednesday, reaching as high as $241.50 and settling at $240.11 before the close. This represents a slight increase from the previous day's closing price of $232.09.

The significant price movement was accompanied by a notable shift in institutional buying activity. According to data from Quiver Quantitative, 1,936 institutions increased their IBM positions in the latest quarter, compared with 1,592 that reduced holdings. Key investors such as JPMorgan Chase and Wellington Management were among those who increased their stakes.

IBM's quantum-computing progress has strengthened its growth narrative, with the company, along with Cleveland Clinic and RIKEN, advancing to the finals for the 2026 ACM Gordon Bell Prize after using quantum-centric supercomputing to model a 12,635-atom protein. This achievement highlights potential applications for IBM's quantum and hybrid-computing technologies in life sciences.

Additionally, partner activity has reinforced IBM's AI and mainframe franchises, with LTM collaborating with IBM and Red Hat on Lightwell, an AI-driven open-source software remediation platform. Rocket Software also launched a risk and compliance portfolio for IBM Z environments, which could support demand for IBM's mission-critical mainframe ecosystem.

However, some analysts remain cautious, with Arista Networks favored over IBM due to its stronger performance, improving estimates, and AI-cloud growth. Meanwhile, one insider sold 25,000 shares of IBM stock for approximately $5.8 million in a transaction that occurred on August 26th.
