IBM Underperforms S&P 500 as Tech Giant Faces Downtrend
International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) is a global enterprise technology and services company that helps businesses modernize their IT infrastructure and deploy AI across complex environments. With a market cap of $222 billion, IBM serves customers in more than 175 countries, including large enterprises and highly regulated industries.
The tech giant has fallen 29.7% from its 52-week high of $332.46, reached on June 2. Shares of IBM have dipped 21.5% over the past three months, trailing the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which has rallied 1.4%. On a YTD basis, shares of IBM are down 21.1%, compared to SPX's 12.3% rise.
In the longer term, IBM has dropped 4.8% over the past 52 weeks, notably underperforming the index's 18.2% uptick over the same time frame. The stock has fallen below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since early July, indicating a downtrend.
However, investors were pleased with IBM's acquisition of HRL Laboratories on August 26, which strengthens the company's quantum-computing capabilities by adding HRL's expertise in silicon-spin qubits. The deal is expected to accelerate IBM's quantum hardware roadmap and support scalable manufacturing.
