IBM Wins $1B US Award for Quantum Wafer Manufacturing
IBM has secured a $1 billion award from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act to support research and development for quantum wafer manufacturing through its subsidiary Anderon.
This is in addition to IBM's own investment of $1 billion into Anderon, which will provide substantial backing as it begins production at its 300-millimeter quantum wafer foundry in Albany, New York.
Anderon has already started running its first quantum wafers through the facility, with initial production focused on superconducting qubit arrays, quantum input/output signaling, and readout components. IBM Research Director Jay Gambetta said Anderon is intended to provide the wafer fabrication capacity needed to support IBM's quantum roadmap.
The company has previously stated its plans to invest over $10 billion in quantum computing over five years, covering research, capital spending, manufacturing, acquisitions, and ecosystem expansion. The next key milestone will be whether Anderon can turn its early production into meaningful customer activity and higher manufacturing volumes.
