Indian-Origin Executives Take Center Stage in Global AI Strategies
Indian-origin executives are in high demand to lead AI strategies globally, as companies like Siemens AG, Honeywell Aerospace, Boeing, and GE Healthcare create roles of chief AI and data officer. These leaders are tasked with spearheading their companies' artificial intelligence efforts, navigating the complexities of physical AI, which involves algorithms that process text or code but also navigate jet engines, factory floors, and hospital wards.
Vasi Philomin, executive vice-president and head of data and AI at Siemens, is a prime example. He joined the company in 2025 to accelerate its industrial AI portfolio and has experience leading AI product strategy at Amazon Web Services. Other companies, such as Honeywell Aerospace and Boeing, have also appointed Indian-origin leaders to their top AI positions.
R Gopalakrishnan, coauthor of The Made in India Manager, attributes the rise of Indian-origin talent to a meritocratic system that promotes exceptional talent and Indians' ability to solve problems. He notes that the field is not unique to Indians but rather a high-profile space where talented individuals are emerging.
Peter Bendor-Samuel, founder and executive chairman of Everest Group, argues that dedicated chief AI Officers are essential due to the advent of Generative AI, which has the potential to disrupt every aspect of an enterprise. He notes that these leaders must have a deep understanding of technical issues, engineering background, direct experience with AI, and domain expertise.
