India's tech sector is experiencing significant workforce restructuring as major players such as Oracle and Microsoft implement job cuts. According to reports, Oracle is expected to eliminate around 3,000 positions in India as part of its global workforce reduction efforts. The company has cited the adoption and deployment of AI technologies across its operations as a reason for these cuts.

The layoffs at Oracle follow a larger reduction during its fiscal 2026, with the company's global headcount falling from about 162,000 employees to 141,000, a decrease of roughly 21,000 positions or 13% of its workforce. The manner in which some employees have been informed has added to anxiety among Oracle workers.

In related news, Microsoft has placed around 500 employees in India on performance improvement plans (PIPs), with an estimated 2% of the company's India workforce potentially affected by a global PIP exercise. However, Microsoft clarified that being placed on a PIP should not be automatically interpreted as a layoff.
