JPMorgan Expands Investment Banking Team with Rob Sweeney Hire
JPMorgan Chase has appointed Rob Sweeney, a seasoned dealmaker with prior experience at Goldman Sachs and Sycamore, as the new global chair of investment banking. According to an internal memo, Sweeney will focus on advising major corporate clients, especially in the consumer and retail sectors. He will also collaborate with senior bankers on key client relationships and contribute to the bank's security and resilience initiatives.
The move comes as banks compete to capture a larger share of a resurgent dealmaking market following several years of low activity in mergers and equity issuance. JPMorgan has significantly expanded its workforce, hiring over 1,000 bankers globally this year. The bank is broadening its coverage teams across various industries and regions to capitalize on increasing corporate activity.
JPMorgan has recently made several high-profile hires in its global banking division, including Amy Lissauer as the global head of shareholder activism and Michael Flynn as the head of small-cap investment banking. In the second quarter, the bank's investment banking fees rose 30% from the previous year, reaching their highest level since 2021.
Co-President Doug Petno indicated in September that JPMorgan anticipates investment banking fees in the third quarter to increase by a mid-to-high teens percentage compared to the same period last year. This growth is supported by a robust deal pipeline and broad-based strength across the investment banking business.
