JPMorgan Vet Matt Zames Joins SSA Amid Technology Modernization Push
Matt Zames, former chief operating officer of JPMorgan Chase, is joining the Social Security Administration (SSA) as an unpaid advisor to help modernize the agency's outdated technology infrastructure. Zames starts on Monday at SSA headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.
The SSA relies on decades-old systems, and Zames will assist Commissioner Frank Bisignano, a former JPMorgan colleague, in updating these systems. Under special government employee rules, the role has a 130-day limit, although it could extend further in calendar terms since Zames won't be working full-time.
Zames rose to prominence at JPMorgan after helping address the bank's $6 billion 'London Whale' trading loss and served as COO for around five years. He later founded an advisory and restructuring firm, which he left in 2021.
The SSA is facing difficulties beyond its outdated systems, including a projected depletion of its retirement trust fund within about ten years. Analysts warn that this could necessitate reductions in payments to beneficiaries.
