Judge Dismisses Michigan Antitrust Lawsuit Against Major Oil Companies
A US judge has dismissed an antitrust lawsuit filed by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel against five major oil companies, including BP, Chevron, Exxon, and Shell.
The lawsuit alleged that the companies conspired to stifle competition in renewable energy technologies, such as electric vehicles. However, US District Judge Jane Beckering rejected the claim, stating that antitrust laws only protect against overcharges for energy.
Beckering said the conspiracy did not proximately cause the overcharges, which is a key requirement for the lawsuit to succeed. This decision aligns with prior rulings in similar cases across various states.
The oil companies have been fighting against climate lawsuits by state and local governments for years, with many of these cases still pending.
