Judge Dismisses Michigan Climate Lawsuit Against Oil Giants
A federal judge has dismissed Michigan's climate lawsuit against major oil companies, ruling that the state lacks standing to sue for antitrust violations.
The suit, filed by Attorney General Dana Nessel in January, accused ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, Shell and the American Petroleum Institute of conspiring to drive up energy prices by suppressing renewable energy sources.
Nessel claimed that the oil companies worked together to keep Michigan consumers 'locked in transportation and energy markets that rely on dated and expensive technologies,' including hiding the effects of greenhouse gases on the global climate.
The judge ruled that there is no evidence to suggest that the alleged conspiracy had a significant impact on energy prices, citing technological developments, supply and demand for fossil fuels, and investors' appetite for renewable energy projects as factors that influenced prices.
