Lai: Taiwan's Chip Prowess Built on Democracy and Rule of Law
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te emphasized that Taiwan's semiconductor prowess is built on the foundations of democracy and rule of law, making it a trusted international partner in chip manufacturing.
Lai made this statement at the SEMICON trade show in Taipei, where senior executives from companies including Microsoft and Alphabet Inc's Google are in attendance. TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, is also present, as it invests heavily to supply the global market with advanced chips for AI computing power.
Lai noted that Taiwan has built a complete semiconductor cluster over the decades, with fast, flexible, and highly efficient manufacturing capabilities. This foundation of democracy and rule of law has enabled Taiwan to stably supply the global market and keep its promises.
TSMC is investing $265 billion to build factories in Arizona, following pressure from the US to reduce the concentration of chipmaking on the island. TSMC's €3.5 billion investment in Germany for its first factory in Europe has also drawn attention.
