Lawsuit Claims Leading AI Companies Colluded on AI Development Slowdown
A lawsuit has been filed against four leading AI companies - Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google - alleging they made an illegal agreement to slow down their respective AI development.
The plaintiffs argue that the coordination took place on September 12th, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favor of enhanced safety measures. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind's co-founder and chair Demis Hassabis publicly responded to Amodei's proposals in agreement.
The lawsuit claims that this agreement has an anticompetitive effect on consumers, reducing the value they get from paid AI subscriptions. The plaintiffs are seeking a nationwide class action against the companies.
In response to the allegations, Nick Rowley, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs, stated: 'AI will quickly spin out of human control and could kill us all if we allow AI safety and protocol... to be controlled by private self-serving agreements between the world's most powerful 'for profit' technology companies.'
