Boeing has announced that Leonardo has become an official partner on the MQ-28 Ghost Bat program, marking a significant shift in the development of the uncrewed 'loyal wingman' aircraft. The partnership was confirmed by Glen Ferguson, MQ-28 Program Global Director, at the Farnborough Airshow.

The MQ-28 Ghost Bat is designed to fly alongside crewed fighters and expand their capabilities. Leonardo's involvement in the program comes after eight years of collaboration, during which they contributed electronic systems. The partnership is seen as a key step towards building a library of capability within partner companies, allowing for more sovereign control over drone development.

The Ghost Bat has already accumulated over 200 flight hours and participated in the Valiant Shield exercise, demonstrating its ability to fly without fixed infrastructure and turn around between sorties in under 20 minutes. Boeing is re-tailoring the aircraft for European buyers who want a drone they can help build and control themselves.
