LibreOffice Challenges Microsoft's Office Ribbon

The Document Foundation's LibreOffice is taking aim at Microsoft's Office Ribbon again, this time questioning its effectiveness for all users. According to a recent blog post by Italo Vignoli, founding member of The Document Foundation, the Ribbon is well-designed but only suitable for intermediate users.

Vignoli argues that beginners may get lost in the Ribbon's layout, while power users may find it takes up too much vertical screen space and prefer keyboard commands instead. He claims that LibreOffice offers a more flexible UI with multiple options to cater to different user needs.

LibreOffice 26.8 will introduce an improved Tabbed interface similar to Office 365's Ribbon, but Vignoli emphasizes that this is not a departure from the project's original design goals. Instead, it aims to provide users with more choices and adaptability.
