Local Publishers Sue OpenAI and Microsoft Over AI Content Use

A new complaint has been filed against OpenAI Inc. and Microsoft Corp. by a group of local news publishers, accusing them of using protected works to train their AI models without permission or compensation.

The complaint was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of 160 news publications owned by 26 different publishers, including the Tampa Bay Times and the Austin Chronicle.

The plaintiff publishers claim that OpenAI and Microsoft built their valuable businesses on the backs of the protected works without giving credit or paying royalties. The complaint states that 'Defendants built some of the most valuable businesses in human history' using this method.
