Luai's Coca-Cola Conundrum: PNG Chiefs' Sponsor Clash with Rugby Star's Pepsi Deal
The PNG Chiefs rugby league team has announced a multi-million-dollar partnership with Coca-Cola, which will see the brand's logo on their jerseys and other promotional materials. However, this deal may create an awkward situation for one of their marquee players, Jerome Luai, who has recently signed on as the face of Pepsi in Papua New Guinea.
The move creates a clash between Luai's personal third-party deal with Pepsi and the Chiefs' partnership with Coca-Cola, which is worth millions. Despite this, the team's CEO, Lorna McPherson, said they are 'conscious of the clash but unconcerned that it would undermine the club's partnership with Coke.'
'Situations happen where individual players have commercial relationships with one brand that can sit alongside the club's partnerships,' McPherson explained. Luai will be able to continue with his Pepsi deal, but how the team feels about having their highest-profile player associated with Coca-Cola logos on their jerseys is unclear.
