Mag Seven Stocks Split as Amazon and Microsoft Lead AI Charge
The once-unified Mag Seven group of tech stocks has begun to split into clear winners and losers as investors increasingly demand measurable AI adoption and returns. Amazon and Microsoft have emerged as the standout performers, with their shares surging due to visible AI growth and significant cloud infrastructure investments.
Morningstar analyst Sara Araghi noted that companies must demonstrate near-term AI monetization or provide evidence of sufficient returns, warning that investors now require a 'higher burden of proof' for these investments. Amazon's quarterly earnings report showed a 37% jump in AWS revenue to $42.2 billion, its fastest growth since 2021.
Meanwhile, Alphabet rebounded after Amazon's results strengthened the case for its own massive spending plan, while Meta and Apple fell due to concerns over capital spending and AI-driven supply chain pressures. Microsoft saw a significant rally, with Azure growth accelerating to about 43% and paid Microsoft 365 Copilot users doubling to roughly 30 million.
The divide among Mag Seven stocks is evident, with Amazon and Microsoft leading the charge as investors reward visible AI growth and returns. The once-unified trade now faces increased scrutiny, requiring companies to provide measurable proof points for their AI investments.
