Malaysia Airlines Set to Bring Back Boeing Widebodies with 787-10 Order
Malaysia Airlines is reportedly close to placing an order for around 10 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners as part of its long-haul fleet renewal strategy. The aircraft would replace seven leased Airbus A350s and add capacity for future growth.
The airline evaluated aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus before choosing the 787-10, which offers earlier delivery slots starting in 2031 and more favorable engine terms. GE Aviation is said to have offered better engine commercial terms than Rolls-Royce during the competition.
The potential order comes against the backdrop of Malaysia's wider aircraft purchases from Boeing, including a 2025 agreement for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft. A finalized 787-10 order would mark Boeing's return to Malaysia Airlines' widebody fleet after the retirement of its Boeing 777 aircraft.
