Mandalorian Fails to Meet Box Office Expectations
Disney's recent Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, has failed to meet expectations at the box office. According to Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro, the film underperformed in terms of ticket sales, but its impact on other revenue streams was significant.
The film's $165 million production budget plus marketing costs likely led to a substantial shortfall for the studio when looking at things strictly from the perspective of cost vs. the studio's share of ticket sales. Despite this, D'Amaro noted that the film drove healthy growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise and drew guests to the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The company's CFO Hugh Johnston added that theatrical performance is important but the nature of the film industry is more of a portfolio game. He stated, 'The good news for us is our diversified business helps us basically cover the volatility that comes out of the film business.'
