Mangione Plea Resolves Federal Case Amid UNH Governance Allegations
Luigi Mangione, 28, entered an open plea in a Manhattan federal courtroom for his role in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The plea resolves the federal case against Mangione, who faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
Mangione's allocution revealed that he had posed as an investor managing over $50 billion in assets and emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership to confirm the location of their annual investor conference. This interaction sparked commentary across the healthcare industry about how easily Mangione was able to deceive company leaders.
Separately, a shareholder derivative complaint filed against United Health Group (NYSE: UNH) alleges that executives fraudulently inflated Medicare Advantage revenue by making members appear sicker than they were and used an AI algorithm to deny post-acute care to elderly patients at a rate of 90% error. The plaintiffs claim that this misconduct destroyed $277 billion in shareholder value between December 2024 and August 2025.
UnitedHealth Group's shares ticked up 0.67% to $401.73 after Mangione entered his plea, but the stock remains roughly $60 below its 52-week high.
